Fall In The Desert: 5 Tips to Transition Your Home Décor for Fall (For Women Over 50)

fall in the desert: 5 tips to transition your decor from summer to fall for women over 50

When you live in the desert, traditional signs of fall—crisp air, crunchy leaves, and chilly nights—can be a little harder to come by. It can be hard to feel that cozy and comfy vibe when the temperature is still 100 degrees. But that doesn’t mean you can’t embrace the cozy, golden beauty of autumn inside your home. For women over 50, fall can be a season of reflection, creativity, and comfort. Transitioning your décor for the season is a wonderful way to express your style, welcome the shift in seasons, and create a space that feels both nurturing and inspiring. Here are five easy ways to bring the spirit of fall into your desert home.

1. Shift Your Color Palette to Earthy Autumn Hues

Desert dwellers are no strangers to earthy tones, but fall gives you an opportunity to layer in deeper, richer shades like rust, terracotta, golden mustard, and sage green. Try swapping out summer brights for accent pillows, throw blankets, and table linens in these warm hues. If you love a neutral palette, simply add copper and soft browns to your existing creams and whites. Follow the colors of nature, and you can’t go wrong. It’s a simple shift that can make your space feel instantly cozier.

2. Use Natural Textures and Desert-Inspired Décor

Celebrate the season by incorporating natural materials that reflect the desert landscape. Woven baskets, raw wood accents, pottery, and dried botanicals all bring a grounded, fall-inspired vibe. Try filling vases with dried pampas grass, desert marigolds, or eucalyptus. Pumpkins and gourds are an instant way to create a fall vibe. Display handmade items, local artisan pieces, or even desert rocks and driftwood for a sense of place and personality.

3. Light It Up with Cozy Ambiance

As the desert sun sets earlier, make your home glow with soft, layered lighting. Swap bright overhead lights for warm table lamps, flameless candles, and string lights. My favorite flameless candles are ones that work by remote control or timers.  If you enjoy fragrance, look for cinnamon, sandalwood, or vanilla-scented candles that evoke autumnal coziness. These small touches can make your evenings feel more intimate and relaxing—perfect for reading, journaling, or hosting friends.

4. Add Seasonal Touches—Without the Frost

In a desert home, heavy flannel and faux snowflakes might feel out of place. Instead, focus on fall décor that feels authentic to your environment. Try creating centerpieces using gourds, succulents, or even painted cacti. Hang a wreath made of dried grasses or desert blooms on your door. Dried herbs in pots are a welcome addition. These subtle nods to the season feel festive without clashing with your region’s natural beauty.

5. Create a Comfort Zone Just for You

One of the joys of midlife is embracing what makes you feel good. This fall, create a nook in your home that’s just for you—a comfy chair with a soft throw, a cup of tea, and your favorite book. Add fall-themed touches like a handmade mug or a rustic tray for a seasonal feel. I enjoy curling up with my fireplace on minus the heat. I create my own fall vibe. Whether it’s your morning ritual or evening wind-down space, it’s a gift you deserve.

Final Thought: Savor the Season

Living in the desert doesn’t mean missing out on fall—it simply means reimagining it with your unique flair. With a few thoughtful touches, you can turn your home into a beautiful sanctuary that reflects your style, honors the season, and nourishes your spirit.

Happy Fall,

Carrie

Fun at our neighborhood 4th of July party

Fresh & Fabulous Recipes

Grilled Peach & Burrata Salad
Skip the heavy potato salad and go light and luscious with grilled peaches, creamy burrata, and fresh basil drizzled with balsamic glaze. It’s beautiful, flavorful, and easy on the waistline. I enjoyed a grilled peach salad at our neighborhood restaurant. It was delicious!

Herbed Chicken Skewers
Marinate chunks of chicken breast in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and rosemary. Skewer with zucchini and cherry tomatoes, then grill to perfection. A great alternative to traditional burgers and dogs.

Mini Berry Trifles
Layer angel food cake cubes with Greek yogurt and a mix of strawberries and blueberries in mason jars or clear glasses. It’s patriotic, light, and perfect for portion control. Single-serve desserts are perfect for a party.

Chic Yet Simple Décor

Red, White & Blue with a Twist
Trade in the plastic flags for vintage linens in soft hues of ivory, dusty blue, and cranberry. Add fresh flowers—hydrangeas, daisies, or wildflowers—in rustic pitchers or mason jars for a timeless, elegant touch. I cut my hydrangeas and dry them each year. They last for years, and I use them to decorate for many holidays.

String Lights & Candles
As the sun sets, ambient lighting creates a magical atmosphere. Drape white string lights across a patio or garden and cluster citronella candles in glass hurricane jars for both charm and function.

Memory Lane Table Setting
Print vintage family photos or snapshots from past July 4ths and tuck them into napkin rings or place under clear plates. It sparks conversation and brings a personal, sentimental feel. Have guests guess who is who.

Cocktails with a Kick (and a Mocktail, too!)

Sparkling Elderflower Spritz
Mix prosecco, elderflower liqueur, and soda water over ice. Garnish with a lemon twist and a sprig of mint. Light, floral, and oh-so-refreshing.

Blueberry Basil Gin Fizz
Muddle fresh blueberries and basil, add gin, lemon juice, and a splash of tonic. Shake with ice and serve over crushed ice in a highball glass.

Cucumber-Lime Cooler (Mocktail)
For a non-alcoholic option, muddle cucumber and mint, add lime juice, and club soda. Serve in a tall glass with a cucumber ribbon for a spa-like treat. Cucumber-lime is one of my favorite combinations.

Easy Summer Living

Summer is still going strong, and I plan to enjoy the easy summer living lifestyle for as long as I can. I really do enjoy all seasons(okay, maybe winter is not my favorite although I love decorating for the holidays)but summer just has that slower pace vibe about it. We all spend more time outdoors and enjoying the world around us. Summer should be carefree and easy.

For the last few years, I have pared down my summer decor with the theme of keeping it easy and breezy. In my entryway, I just swapped out the winter greenery from my blue and white vases with lemons and cherry blossoms. The yellow adds a pop of summery color against the classic blue and white combination. The pineapples also were added for summer. Of course, a little glow must be added. I brought out a rattan hurricane that gives off the perfect summer vibe. A few simple changes and you are welcomed with summer when arriving at our home. My dining room centerpiece stays fresh with the olive trees candles, and greenery. Simple, clean, and easy.

fresh flowers
Fresh from my garden

Nothing says summer like fresh flowers. I love putting together simple floral arrangements for my kitchen. Use any flowers that you have growing in your gardens. I have an abundance of hydrangeas, roses, and black-eyed Susans in my yard and I put them to good use. Keep your hydrangeas fresh by cutting them in the morning, setting them in a bucket of water for a few hours, and dipping the stems in boiling water for a few seconds. It does make them last longer. I love summer floral arrangements because they look better the less arranged they are—a little bit of a wildflower look.

pond
A place to relax and recharge

With all of the flowerbeds in our yard, I spend many hours outdoors. I think that it’s so important to spend a little time outdoors daily. In the evenings you can usually find me out walking. I love all the wildlife that I see on my walks, deer, turtles, bunnies, and dogs(hopefully no snakes).  Our pond is another place that you will find me spending time at. There is just something about the sound of water. Find something that you love and enjoy a little quiet time in nature. It really does soothe the mind and body.

Spending more time outdoors also means we are eating light and quick meals. We spend most nights eating out in the sunroom. For Bob’s birthday and Father’s Day, he treated himself to a Traeger and we have been enjoying trying new recipes. Do you have a favorite summer recipe? I would love a new recipe.

Summer style is all about ease too. Most days you will find me in a comfortable Lilly dress. Perfect for summer. Add a pair of cute sandals and some colorful jewelry and your outfit is complete. It’s all about comfort and enjoying the season!

I hope you take the time to enjoy all that is left of summer.

Summer Dining Table Design

summer table design

This year with doing so much traveling I decided to keep my dining table a little more simple. To be honest, I have been creating more simple designs lately. I have been drawn to more natural simple elements and designs.

My Longaberger basket has become the focal point for my table each season. It is big and beautiful. The olive trees were in the basket already and I simply added garland around it. The candles and fairy lights I left in for a soft glow. It looks so pretty at night. I love the wreath basket from Longaberger and keep it out all year long. For summer I just added a potted hydrangea for a pop of color.

I usually start with a table runner to fit the season. This bamboo design is perfect for summer. Keeping with my natural theme I kept the birdcages on the table this year. Normally, I take them down for the summer but this year decided to leave them out for the season. I like the change. A little touch of summer was added with mason jars and Emma Bridgewater bud vases.

Summer place setting in style

My place settings were simple this year. I ordered these pink charges a few years ago and they are the first layer.  A placemat from Lucy Grymes is the second layer. I love the scalloped shape of these. My Juliska plates complete the look along with a seersucker napkin in pink.

What do you think? A simple summer tablescape.

Fall Dining Room Makeover And Decor

fall dining table decir

Fall is finally here, and as much as I love summer and summer decor, I was looking forward to decorating for Fall. I always like to focus on a few key areas for impact and build on my decor from there. The dining room is always my first spot to decorate. I try to change it or do something a little different each year.

This wreath I purchased at a craft fair and I think it is perfect in this space. It really brings out the fall colors in the room. I may leave it out all year too. My corner table got a little makeover for fall too with just a few key pieces.

I started with my Longaberger placemats and napkins. The fruit pattern is the same pattern on my valances and border so it coordinates perfectly. I love the pop of blue in the pattern too. The place settings are also from Longaberger from years ago. The place setting is simple with the white pumpkin and acrylic word again in the pop of blue.

The center of my table always has the beautiful tray that Bob made me. I love using it as a focal point and building from there. My Emma Bridgewater hurricane is always a favorite each season. I added the wine cooler, fall floral display, and smaller Bridgewater vases to the tray.

A beautiful tray to group items

The olive trees line the rest of the table, and I love the natural look these add to the design. The design was finished with candles from Rae Dunn, glass pumpkins, and acorns and pumpkins. The design did not take too much time, and I think it brings in the fall feel to the dining room. Happy decorating!

Until next week,

Carrie

Summer Celebration Lunch

ladies luncheon

Summer is almost over and I thought it was the perfect time to get a couple of my closest friends together for lunch. We have all been so busy this summer and needed to catch up. Summer has gone by so fast, hasn’t it?

I always like a theme. I think that makes it so much easier to plan around. Wanting to keep it casual, I chose an easy summer theme with flowers and bright colors. My garden is in full bloom so I picked some hydrangeas, black-eyed Susans, and roses to use in my centerpiece and decor. Quick tip for making hydrangeas last, cut them in the morning, put them in a few inches of water for a few hours, and dip the cut stems in boiling water for a few seconds. Your hydrangeas will last so long! I love paper goods and Lucy Grymes has become a new favorite. Her patterns are so cute and I love the vase wraps. These wraps turn any container (even a simple drinking glass) into a pretty vase. I went with the bamboo-style wraps to coordinate with a floral placemat that reminded me of Lilly. Quick and easy centerpiece and table decor.

I went with my trusty old favorite Entertaining with Longaberger book. This book is about 20 years old and it continues to be my go-to for entertaining. I picked a sparkling lemonade recipe but switched out the flavor to lavender. I love lavender. A charcuterie board started the afternoon followed by an overnight marinated vegetable salad and chicken sandwiches with a carmelized onion-apple relish. That relish was delicious. The dessert consisted of a strawberry daiquiri bundt cake from Dockside Market. Dockside Market is a partner of Longaberger and created this flavor specifically for our Horizon of Hope campaign. I also displayed the cake on the Moser Glass small cake stand from Longaberger. The color is perfect and neutral enough to coordinate with any style and decor.

Entertaining does not have to be complicated or stressful. I always set the table the night before to save time the next day. I also find setting out all of the platters, serving pieces, and utensils the night before so helpful too. This ensures that I am not searching for something the day of. I always like to send my guests home with a small goodie too. This time I found little bottles of the lemonade wine I served and added a burlap bow to the bottle. A bath bomb in a cute box makes a lovely gift too. What could be better than wine and a bath bomb? I think that makes for a perfect evening.

We had a perfect afternoon catching up. Sometimes a day with good friends is really what you need! Honestly, just spending time together is really the most important thing!

Until next week,

Carrie

Quick And Easy Centerpieces with Longaberger Baskets

quick longaberger centerpiece

I was having some friends over for a luncheon and needed a quick centerpiece for my foyer table. I didn’t have time to run to the market for flowers and lately, the flowers have not looked great. This wreath basket from Longaberger is actually from the holiday collection but I think it is perfect to use year-round.

A few supplies are all that was needed

The hurricane from Emma Bridgewater has been the focal point of my foyer table and I thought the wreath basket would fit nicely over it. I had some colorful garland left from a previous project and proceeded to wind it around in the basket. The pink pineapples were already on my table as well as the runner with pink monogram and smaller Emma Bridgewater bud vases. I like the pop of pink and in a matter of a few minutes I had a new centerpiece.

I love the twinkle of fairy lights. They just give such a beautiful glow. This basket from the Longaberger 1896 collection is so beautiful and rustic. I love the larger weave and I did not want to put anything in it that would cover the weave. Fairy lights were the perfect answer.

Longaberger 1896 Collection

longaberger 1896 collection

The Longaberger 1896 Collection is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I started with one piece and am adding to my collection. My favorite feature of this collection is that the pieces are all handcrafted to look like they have been passed down from generation to generation. The color is beautiful, and I can imagine these baskets being used in my grandmother’s house. All of these pieces coordinate perfectly with other Longaberger collections or any home decor style. The 1896 Collection embodies the past, present, and future evolution of the basket weaving craft and an iconic, American brand. Through this collection, we celebrate our beginnings, embrace the dreams of our crafters and lead with creativity through every basket that is woven with Longaberger.  I’ll just share a few of my favorites.

The square organizing basket can be used for so many different things. A simple plant looks so pretty in it or seasonal foliage too. Add a few hand towels for a guest bath, snacks for a guest bedroom, or a tissue box. Standing alone, this basket makes a beautiful statement.

A gorgeous wastebasket for the office yes, please. I think this basket would also be perfect for umbrellas or pool towels too. The height of this basket is sure to be noticed in any room.

The produce basket is my first piece of the collection. I have a strand of fairy lights in it and displayed on a shelf. The twinkling lights look so beautiful through the weave at night. Of course, it also is perfect for fruits and vegetables on the counter.

 Not just for produce

My dining room table is my favorite thing to decorate and redecorate. How perfect are these placemats and napkin rings? They are beautiful, and being neutral in color they will coordinate with everything. I love that antique and vintage feel of these. They will definitely be making an appearance on my table soon. These would also be pretty hanging on a wall to display photos or twinkle lights.

4th of July Decor & Style

I love the 4th of July. I know, I know that means summer is half over, but it is such a special day. The town where my husband grew up and that we lived in when we were first married always puts on a fantastic parade. We see all of our old friends, bringing back so many happy memories. This year, our street is having a block party complete with fireworks(don’t tell anybody). Poor Ruby Sue, she will definitely need her medicine that night.

I decided to keep my dining room and decor simple this year. I have a collection of patriotic baskets from Longaberger and I thought that they would look nice on the dining room table. I wanted to keep my lemon and blue decor and the baskets were a nice compliment. The glass bottles were a great find at DollarTree years ago, and the simple addition of flags takes them up a notch. Garlands were the finishing touch.

My fireplace area always is draped in patriotic bunting. Simple and classic. I added a USA set of letters, floral picks, glass bottles, and candle holders. I kept this simple as well.

The entry is fun with the fireworks decor. The wooden flag I painted a few years ago and this year I decided to let it stand on its own. I sprinkled a little more decor throughout the house, but these are the key areas that I try to focus on. This week will be outdoor decorating.

Lilly Pulitzer is a timeless American brand, and I love that they come ut with a new patriotic pattern every year with their colorful spin. This dress is from the newest collection. I paired it with an acrylic monogrammed star necklace.

I liked this print so much that I also bought the matching skort and top. Wear them together and you have what we call a Lilly tuxedo. This will be my outfit for our neighborhood party and parade. For a casual event, I paired a patriotic monogrammed tank with a pair of Lilly shorts from seasons ago. Add a pair of white keds to any of these outfits and you are ready for the 4th.
