Easy Summer Living

Summer is still going strong, and I plan to enjoy the easy summer living lifestyle for as long as I can. I really do enjoy all seasons(okay, maybe winter is not my favorite although I love decorating for the holidays)but summer just has that slower pace vibe about it. We all spend more time outdoors and enjoying the world around us. Summer should be carefree and easy.

For the last few years, I have pared down my summer decor with the theme of keeping it easy and breezy. In my entryway, I just swapped out the winter greenery from my blue and white vases with lemons and cherry blossoms. The yellow adds a pop of summery color against the classic blue and white combination. The pineapples also were added for summer. Of course, a little glow must be added. I brought out a rattan hurricane that gives off the perfect summer vibe. A few simple changes and you are welcomed with summer when arriving at our home. My dining room centerpiece stays fresh with the olive trees candles, and greenery. Simple, clean, and easy.

fresh flowers
Fresh from my garden

Nothing says summer like fresh flowers. I love putting together simple floral arrangements for my kitchen. Use any flowers that you have growing in your gardens. I have an abundance of hydrangeas, roses, and black-eyed Susans in my yard and I put them to good use. Keep your hydrangeas fresh by cutting them in the morning, setting them in a bucket of water for a few hours, and dipping the stems in boiling water for a few seconds. It does make them last longer. I love summer floral arrangements because they look better the less arranged they are—a little bit of a wildflower look.

pond
A place to relax and recharge

With all of the flowerbeds in our yard, I spend many hours outdoors. I think that it’s so important to spend a little time outdoors daily. In the evenings you can usually find me out walking. I love all the wildlife that I see on my walks, deer, turtles, bunnies, and dogs(hopefully no snakes).  Our pond is another place that you will find me spending time at. There is just something about the sound of water. Find something that you love and enjoy a little quiet time in nature. It really does soothe the mind and body.

Spending more time outdoors also means we are eating light and quick meals. We spend most nights eating out in the sunroom. For Bob’s birthday and Father’s Day, he treated himself to a Traeger and we have been enjoying trying new recipes. Do you have a favorite summer recipe? I would love a new recipe.

Summer style is all about ease too. Most days you will find me in a comfortable Lilly dress. Perfect for summer. Add a pair of cute sandals and some colorful jewelry and your outfit is complete. It’s all about comfort and enjoying the season!

I hope you take the time to enjoy all that is left of summer.

June Favorites

june favorites

June has been a busy busy month. I attended the Pink Retreat in Palm Beach again this year. It just gets better and better each year. Catching up with friends, it’s always a great time. We pick up right where we left off, those friendships are priceless. We have been busy keeping up in the gardens with summer in full swing. I don’t know about you but we have had no rain here in weeks. With lots of water and care, the plants are hanging in there. June was a mix of all sorts of favorites. I hope you enjoy it!

My new issue of Bella Grace arrived and I enjoy reading a bit of it every night before bed. It’s uplifting and unlike any other magazine that I have read. This is a magazine that I take my time reading. Bella Grace encourages you to find magic in the ordinary and that everything is special. The photography and stories are beautiful and so well written. There are also worksheets for you to complete to get the most out of this magazine. It has become my favorite treat!

Have you ever been at the airport desperately searching for your luggage? I don’t anymore. I treated myself to a brightly colored suitcase. Trust me, you can’t miss it. I ordered mine on Amazon. Marshalls has a nice selection of bright bags too.  A colorful luggage tag from Lilly Pulitzer makes identification easier too. Who wants to spend time looking for luggage? Not me, I’m ready to get my vacation started.

I make sure to always have a hat with me if I’m traveling somewhere warm. How fun is this hat that I picked up a few years ago? Unfortunately, it is not available anymore but there are great options at all of the stores. I make sure to look stylish and comfortable on travel day. Normally I will wear a comfortable Lilly dress, a sweater over my shoulders(those planes can get so cold), and comfortable sneakers for walking the airports.

I switch my scents each season and my go-to summer fragrance is Beach by Bobbi Brown. It smells exactly like it sounds, the beach. I can’t get enough of it. It pairs nicely with At The Beach from Bath and Body Works too. I use the wash and lotion from there.

I change my front door wreath each season to reflect the time of year. A plain wreath can be dressed up and changed out all year long. Adding a ribbon for the 4th of July or any holiday gives it a fresh look. A guest will get the feel and vibe of your home from the front porch and door decor. Make it welcoming.

I hope you find time to enjoy the great that summer has to offer. It is going to go by so fast.

Spring Garden Prep Tips

spring garden prep tips

Spring has sprung and I can’t wait to get into the garden. I start thinking about what I want to plant and where, color schemes, and new plants I want to try. Before anything can get done in the garden, it must be prepared after the fall and winter seasons. Trust me, you will be glad that you did this. These are a few of my tried and true tips.

The very first thing that I do is give the flowerbeds, tools, and pots a good tidying up and cleaning. The windy winters can leave so much debris in the flowerbeds. I remove any twigs, branches, and extra leaves that have accumulated against the house. Weeds are sometimes already popping up and I remove any of those as well. In my flowerpots, I tend to only take soil out at the top especially if the pot is a big one. I check to see if the remaining soil looks fine to use again. If it does, I will just add a fresh layer on top. I check all of my tools and make sure that they are clean and ready to go for another season.

spring garden prep tips

Spring is the perfect time to divide perennials and transplant shrubs. This year I have a spot that I want to fill with hostas and I am going to divide and transplant them. I always try to use what I already have to fill in other spaces. Shrubs can be a little more difficult to transplant and that is why spring is the time to tackle the project. The plants are small and that makes the job much easier.

I can’t tell you how long I spend coming up with a color scheme for my pots every year. It always involves a variation of pink. There are many great books out there or just browse the internet for ideas. For the last few years I have potted ferns in my bigger pots and they look gorgeous until the first freeze. My hanging baskets and other pots are filled with colorful plants. Pick a color and go for it!

quick gardening tip

The organization is key to gardening. I have a dedicated area in our garage for everything garden related. A cabinet holds everything for my pond, from the fish food to the bacteria that I add in. Another cabinet holds all of our fertilizers, flower and garden food, and insect sprays. I keep a shelf stocked with the tools and gloves that I use regularly. They are stored in a work bucket in a pouch so I can grab them easily.

This may seem like an odd one but a gardening journal can be so helpful. Sometimes I will forget by the next year if something thrived or did not do well in a certain area or pot. A few notes in a journal solve that problem. A journal is also a great place to plan out what you are going to plant and when.

spring gardening tips

A little more work now and you will be basking in the glory of beautiful gardens and pots. Planning is key. I hope you learned a new tip or two and that you enjoy a season of glorious flowers. I think I am going to head outside and get to some planning.

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Mother’s Day is such a special day to celebrate moms and the women that have made a difference and impact on our lives. Honestly, Mother’s Day should be celebrated every day. It’s hard work. It is nice to treat mom to a day and something special just for her. We always spend part of Mother’s Day with our moms and then usually have dinner out. Bob always goes to the nursery and picks out a plant for me and both our moms. He has done it for years and it’s really sweet. I rounded up a few of my favorites for Mother’s Day guaranteed to warm mom’s heart.

aembr secret garden
Natural and clean scent

Spring-scented candles are always a favorite. Secret Garden from Aembr is a fragrance that I love for the season. Aembr candles are luxury, clean-burning candles formulated by Kristina Braly in her own home. She left her job as a doctor to pursue her dream of owning her own company creating luxury candles that are not full of toxins. The vessels and packaging are beautiful too, she has thought of every detail. I love that story and supporting a woman-owned business. These sell out so quickly each release because they are made in small batches.

5 minute journal
My go-to journal

A beautiful journal makes a wonderful gift. There are so many beautiful options out there. Pair a journal with a pretty pen tied with a bow for a lovely gift. I enjoy writing in my journal daily. It is something that I started during the pandemic and have kept up with it ever since. This is a favorite of mine, a few minutes spent writing in it each morning and evening.

Gardening gifts

I told you that Bob always picks out plants for our moms and they both really enjoy spending time in the garden. Beautiful garden gloves, a gardening set, or another favorite of mine, a gardening journal are perfect for the garden lover. A trug to carry flowers and produce in makes a lovely gift. Plant a little herb garden for mom to keep by her door and she can pick herbs for cooking anytime.

longaberger
Gorgeous and practical

Mother’s Day with Longaberger is always full of beautiful, sentimental, and special gifts that any mother would love. The round storage basket is brand new for Mother’s Day and this soft green is my favorite color yet. Gorgeous. The Mother’s Day Gift Shop has everything you need to let mom know how special she is. Does she love to garden? A trug or utility shears make gardening easy. Does she love jewelry? A Longaberger watch, ring, charm, or leather bracelet is a sophisticated choice. Does she love perfume? Longaberger perfumes are unique and divine. Is mom a fahionista? The woven handbag is a beautiful, functional, and stylish gift.

mothers day gift guide farmhouse fresh
A sweet treat for mom

Treat mom to a little luxury from FarmHouse Fresh. This is my go-to skincare and body care line. This gist set is a favorite and I purchased it for myself. This basketful of Sweet Tea favorites is scented with a favorite southern drink of peach, ginger, and white tea. It includes hand cream and triple-milled bar soap. The sweet tea scent is light and fresh and I love the little basket it comes in.

mothers day gift guide, time together
Mom & I on an adventure

But, my favorite gift of all to give mom, is time spent together. I have started doing this too with my mom. I will pick out something for us to do together. We have enjoyed paint night, creating a fairy garden, exploring new places in our area, and so much more. Really, isn’t that the best gift of all?

I hope you enjoyed this blog and maybe picked up an idea or two for your mom. My hope is that you get to enjoy the day with those that you love.

Until next week,

Fall Decor

fall decor

It has been a busy week so this blog will be a little shorter. I had the privilege of participating in our local NAWBO/Women in Leadership Annual Conference last week and preparing kept me busy. It was a wonderful day with 300 women enjoying speakers, shopping, networking, lunch, and so much more. I had a great time but boy was I tired. I met so many wonderful ladies and I am looking forward to connecting with them again soon.

Last week I shared my dining room Fall decor. I thought this week I would share the rest of my decor. I always do a little in each room and focus on key areas to create vignettes. My foyer table is changed out each season. This year I took my Longaberger wreath and added Fall garland and acorns as the centerpiece. I like to try to reuse and repurpose as much as I can.

In my family room, I try to concentrate on the fireplace area and built-in area. I had not used my tired tray in a couple of years and decided to fill that with all things Fall. A big impact! The fireplace looks festive with pumpkins and decor from Mackenzie-Childs.

The porch is another favorite area. My potting bench is a treasured piece, and I always add to its decor each season. Switching the pillows on the bench is a quick way to make a change too. Mums, pumpkins, and gourds finished out all of the decor.

I hope you have time to enjoy all that Fall has to offer. The weather is finally starting to feel more like Fall so I am hoping to have our first bonfire and smores of the season soon.

Enjoy!

Carrie

Spring Porch Refresh

spring porch decor

Finally, Spring looks like it is here to stay. Actually, last week here in the midwest it felt more like summer. This week is back to rain. Mother Nature. During the warm stretch, I took full advantage of the weather and freshened up the porch for the season.

spring porch decor

Everything received a good clean. It really needed it after winter. I started with the lights and went from there. The lights look so much nicer all spick and span. I did the ones around the garages too.

spring porch decor

I always start with my potting bench. Bob made this for me a few years ago and I just love it. It fits perfectly. I only added the little watering can and birdhouse from Rae Dunn. The geranium basket came all the way back from Arizona with us. Again, I took everything off and scrubbed it all down. Mrs. Meyers geranium cleaner worked wonders.

potting bench

spring porch decorThis year I decided to add ferns to my pots instead of something colorful. My hanging baskets are ferns as well. I just love ferns, they grow beautifully and last until frost. Instead of the pots flanking the door I moved them to opposite ends of the porch. I also changed the furniture placement this year and the bench now faces the front yard. It’s such a nice peaceful place to sit and enjoy tea and a book. I hope you enjoyed this quick porch refresh.

5 Things I’m Loving, February 2022

5 things i'm loving february

Can you believe that we are a month into the new year already? It feels like we were just celebrating the holidays. January is always cold and dreary in the Midwest so we headed out to the Desert Southwest to spend the next couple of months. I enjoy spending time outside and the abundant sunshine. The little dogs like it too. They were not amused by the cold weather. We are going to do a little landscaping and hopefully watch some baseball. Guests will come in and out and we always enjoy sharing our home with our friends and family. But, it’s the start of a new month and that means new things that I have been enjoying. Enjoy.

The harsh Midwest winter had been doing a number on my skin. It was so unhappy and reactive. A friend recommended that I try Tula Sensitive Skin Treatment Drops. Just a few drops of this mixed with my serum have made such a difference. I notice my skin is not so red and irritable. I plan on keeping this in my routine twice a day for the foreseeable future.

Fresh flowers make me so happy. I treat myself to flowers almost every week. Having them in my kitchen just brings a smile to my face. The local markets always have a nice selection and I usually just pick one up there. During the summer, I really enjoy cutting fresh hydrangeas, roses, and black-eyed Susans from my own flowerbeds.

Fresh flowers every week

Speaking of flowers and landscaping, I needed some new landscape lights. Between the dogs and landscaper, a few of my traditional lights are run over. I decided to try these LED lights from Amazon that are flush to the ground. My friend has them and they look so nice in her flowerbeds. Let’s hope these don’t get crushed too.

Mornings and evenings here in the desert are chilly. Layers are a must. A classic, roomy sweater is a must, and this one from Carrie Kelly Lifestyle fits the bill perfectly. It’s comfortable, on-trend, and personalized.

A cup of tea or hot chocolate is a must for me every day. A pretty teapot makes it even better. Mackenzie-Childs carries a selection of beautiful teapots. The black and white courtly check is a favorite pattern of mine.

These are just a few of my current favorites. Valentine’s Day is coming up and I hope you enjoy the day. Next week, my friends and I are doing a virtual Galentine’s Day, it’s going to be fun. If you have any favorites that I should try, let me know. I love trying new products!

Summer Beach Fairy Garden

summer beach fairy garden

Can you believe it is almost the 4th of July? Summer is flying by so fast, but it always does. Next week is also a big birthday for me, I turn the big 50. Honestly, it really doesn’t seem awful and scary. I feel like I am in a good place. This last year has taught me a lot. I made it a point to keep working out every day and added morning meditation and evening stretch and meditation to my routine as well. Some friendships have gone, and not all friendships were made to last. I have been enjoying stepping into the world of YouTube and content creating, and I really enjoy it. If you would have told me a few years ago I would be doing many of these new things, I would never have believed it. I have found what is good for me and what makes me happy. I am lucky to have a wonderful and supportive family and friends, and two very cute fur babies. I’m looking forward to seeing what the next chapter has in store for me.

I love a fairy garden. The last few years I have had one on my back deck, but the elements always end up destroying it. This year I moved it to my front porch. But, I needed a new and fun theme. I decided on a beach theme. It doesn’t get more fun or summery than that.

My base is actually an old fountain that broke. I just took the top piece off and it makes the perfect base. Some of the pieces I reused, and I ordered some fun beach theme items from Amazon. I decided not to use real plants because they tend to take over as the summer goes along.

I like to start with the big pieces, so the cabana was placed first. Plants, palm trees, and the bridge placement were next. I added a combination of blue glass, light blue rocks, and blue sand to create the water look. There are some bigger pieces of colored glass in the water as well. What beach would be complete without some beach chairs? These are such a cute addition to the garden. A lifeguard chair, boat, picnic table, and surfboard finished the look. I sprinkled colored shells and glass throughout for some color. Adding a set of waterproof fairy lights creates a beautiful glow at night.

I’m really happy with my finished fairy garden this year. They are so much fun, and the possibilities are endless. Have you created a fairy garden? Watch my garden come alive on YouTube.
